Transformation Inspirations : Keith McCoy, Author of Choose Different

Transformation Inspirations : Keith McCoy, Author of Choose Different

I am so fucking excited and honored to share today’s Transformation Inspiration interview with you, because today’s feature is so inspiring to me. Perhaps I’m a little biased, as the bad-ass you’re about to meet is my own dad, but I know that even without my bias this man is inspiring many more than he knows and that ripple effect will only continue to grow.

Keith McCoy is a husband, a father and an entrepreneur currently living in Colorado raising his family while growing a wellness business with his wife. Driven by the ideals of freedom, empowerment and radical accountability intermixed with a passion to serve whenever and wherever the need arises, his book, Choose Different is just one of many ways to increase an ever-growing global ripple.

Below, you’ll find a bit of Keith’s story and where he is now written in his own words, from an excerpt of his brand new book (available now), Choose Different, and then we’ll get into this awesome interview.

“My intention with this book is to bring to light for you what I believe to be one of the most important, if not the most important, principles that defines how I move about my days, weeks and life now. It is to share with you how I was able to come from the life described above and live this – I have been married to the same amazing woman for 20 years. We have 7 (soon to be 8) beautiful kids together. Even though I tried my damnedest in the beginning to sabotage this relationship, and I certainly caused her some pain, she stuck by me. If not for her I do not know where I would be today. I will always maintain that she was the first to teach me that I deserved to be loved unconditionally. She taught me that I needed to love myself. Because of that I learned somewhere along the line that I had to take responsibility for me; for who I was and for the consequences of my actions.

I was forced to see the ripple effect my actions would cause and to hold myself accountable to those ripples. The reality is that in every single thing we do, consciously or otherwise, we leave a mark, there is a cause and an effect. In everything we do, we have a choice. We may often feel like we don’t. And as we will discuss again, feelings aren’t facts. I recently heard a quote that aligns perfectly with this concept – Reality is often harsh, but always fair. So when you step back and look at the reality of your life, if you truly want clarity, you must remove the emotion and see the situation for what it is: The result of your choices. Each choice has a ripple, a butterfly effect, that either affects us, and those around us, in a detrimental way or in a way that benefits us. We cannot get away from this universal truth. And the sooner you can realize, understand and truly appreciate that you are in control of your decisions, and that ultimately the choices you make are the most important thing in how you live your life, the sooner you can begin to live your life by design.” – Keith McCoy, author of Choose Different

Now, let’s get into this super special edition of Transformation Inspirations and get on with the interview bit, shall we?

Where were you at before you transformed your life? What was your experience, emotional state, and perspective like?

I was angry and lost. Broke and living in a victim mentality. My marriage was on the rocks and my relationship with my kids was not a good one.

During that period of your life, what did you wish for or dream of the most for yourself?

I didn’t dream or wish for anything. I didn’t believe that was really possible.

When your life began to change, what cause the shift(s) for you?

I realized that if I didn’t make a change I would lose my kids. I would most likely end up alone. I decided that radical change needed to be made immediately and so I chose to stop drinking and to turn inward. To take full responsibility of my actions and to not blame anyone else.

What did your transformation look like for you, and how did the experience feel?

I dove into Eastern Philosophy. I read Dharma Punx by Noah Levine and Awakening the Buddha Within by Lama Surya Das. In the beginning I was more angry and confused because i only realized how asleep I had been and how asleep most of the rest of us are. In my attempts to find center I only got deeper into frustration. It took a while for me to swing back and realize that the only journey I need to be concerned with is my own. And that how aware or unaware anyone else was or wasn’t really wasn’t my concern.

What practice, tool, or mindset has been the most meaningful and impactful for you along your journey?

Radical Accountability. I am the product of my choices and exactly where I choose to be. Sometimes that is an unconscious choice, or there are unintended consequences of the choices I make. But they are mine and I embrace them. The wins or the lessons, whatever the result.

Having gone through the transformation that you have now, what would you say to your past self?

Honestly? I wouldn’t talk to my old self. I have often said that 2017 me and 2005 me would not be friends. But given the opportunity to do so I would tell him to read Choose Different and let that stand on its own.

Where is your life now? What is your experience, emotional state, and perspective like?

I live a very fulfilled life. I still have unachieved business goals and things I want to do but I have clarity in how to get them and understanding that they will come when they’re supposed to and when I have learned the lessons I need to learn that will make me the person who can handle the abundance I am attracting. I have no true complaints and have learned, and still practice improving, loving what is and becoming the best version of myself possible.

Aside from my immense gratitude for my Dad, he is a living, breathing, legacy leading example of what it means to show up, choose different, and lead both the life you want to and a life that is continuously giving. If you look at your life and the state of things surrounding you and think, “I couldn’t change this if I tried, so why even try.” I hope that you can look at my dad and all of the incredible people featured in this series and know that you can Choose Different. Any moment in time can be your quantum moment. All you’ve got to do is choose.

The Journey Is Messy, Embrace It!

The Journey Is Messy, Embrace It!

Personal + spiritual growth, it sounds so pretty doesn’t it? It is one of the messiest things a person can journey through, and I invite you to know that the mess is the exact reason it is such a beautiful and empowering process. Many of us begin this journey because the sparkle of love + light and enlightenment look so good, and then we begin and we learn that so much of this journey is learning how to rise from the bullshit. That experience is a messy one.

I’d like to invite you to embrace the mess, and invite it to empower you. Because let’s be real, the mess is the only reason we can grow in the first place. How does a tree’s soil gain enough moisture for a tree to properly grow and thrive? Icy winter’s, stormy summers, and a whole lot of changing climates. The cold of the winter empowers the tree because the tree needs the winter snow to fall and melt. The crashing + pouring storms of the summer empower the trees in the same way, pushing the tree to take it’s roots to a place that will hold it stably, raining water into the soil for the tree to be nourished.

We’ve got icy winters and summer storms of our own and those seasons are messy, but it is within that mess that we learn. It is from the darkness that we can know light, and it is from our own messes that we can find our messages and our lessons.

There will be times where you don’t know what to say or do, and you won’t know what the right next step will be. There will be times when you feel like you’re going a little bit crazy, but damn you’re so passionate about being able to grow and be as empowered as you can be.

There will be moments when your truth will trigger someone else’s fear, and you’ll likely be named, blamed, and seen as the problem itself.

The magic is though, that we get to choose. We get to choose to play small and keep ourselves safe. We get to choose to live in our passion and take on the mess because let’s be real it’s kind of fun after the fact, and we get to choose to become what we want (or not).

Is it messy? Sure. Is it sometimes like trying to catch your breath when you’re caught in the current of a wave? Definitely.

But do you remember being a kid and finger painting off of the paper and onto the table, or maybe even yourself? Sure, you got in trouble, after a minute it was uncomfortable, but damn it was worth it to experience that freedom and creation.

Life is fucking messy! But you get to choose who you are, and how you live. So live within the mess with as much grace and joy as you can. Embrace the mess, dance with it, invite it to create (with) You.

How to Embrace Every Life Experience with Love

How to Embrace Every Life Experience with Love

Life can be kind of crazy sometimes. The ebb and flow, peaks and valleys, dancing with Life, climbing mountains, falling, and sometimes just sitting still. It can be hard to know what all of it means, if it means anything at all. And it can be difficult to navigate how to make things better when they are feeling less than great. Still, hindsight being 20/20 there is so much more beauty and magic in life than there is pain or darkness. Is there a way to love both the light and dark parts of life, though? And if so, what does that even look like?

When you can understand why the specific things that are occurring in your life are occurring, you can find peace within the process. It is all in your understanding. Perhaps the only understanding that you will need is that everything happens for a reason, and that there is a lesson to be learned from this experience, negative or positive. Other times the understanding you will need will take a little bit more discovery and exploration for your own answers. This shift in perspective will help to soften the darker of experiences in life.

Once you can find a headspace and heartspace of peace, you can then move into the fun stuff. The part where loving every experience comes into play. It isn’t hard to love the beautiful bits of life, and it isn’t hard to sometimes be really grateful for them either. To intentionally hold a space of deep and consistent gratitude takes a little bit more effort. Once you achieve mastery of this practice though, your highs will feel so much higher, and that energy will manifest more positivity.

To do a little bit more intentional work, you can hold a deeply rooted knowing that the negative experiences of life hold just as much magic and light, because through the transformation those tough experiences will reward you with wisdom and trust in the process. If you let them, that is. You see, if you can hold a knowing and gratitude for the universal truth that is everything happens for a reason, and if you can ground into that you can begin to fall in love with even the roughest of chapters of your life.

It is not the easiest practice, but it is one that will gift you with feelings of safety, support, and purpose. You will no longer feel lost and broken in your periods of darkness, but rather you will feel inspired and empowered even when things are hard to sort out. You will find a feeling of peace and contentment with your growth process, and from that place you can bring your own light to whatever the negative situation may be.

While it isn’t fun to say, our darkest moments in life tend to be our most formative, no matter our age. So if you can find gratitude and knowing in the fact that you are exactly where you need to be so that you may reach your highest potential. You can find an underlying love for even the most uncomfortable and unwanted experiences. You can find a power in that space to bring forth light and wisdom that will make the journey a little bit more bearable. There you can embrace any experience that comes your way with a loving understanding, confidence and maybe even joy.

How To Deepen Your Spiritual Practice

How To Deepen Your Spiritual Practice

Cultivating a spiritual practice is such a beautiful and personal experience, and still it can sometimes become stagnant or stale. What are we to do when we want to take our spiritual practice to the next level? How is one supposed to get deeper into their own experience and lessons from Life?

Even in the personal development and self improvement soaked society we have now, we can sometimes come up against our own walls. The first step is to recognize the difference between a wall, a challenge to overcome, and comfortability, a space of contentment. Now, there is nothing wrong with comfortability, but to live in that space for too long can create this stagnant energy. So, how can you break through the stagnancy and move into a flow of continuous growth?

Surrender to the process-

I experienced this lesson in my own meditation practice previously. After having gone to a 10 Day Vipassana retreat I thought I had gone the deepest I could have and I know how to ever get back to that deep and oceanic internal space even though I really wanted to.

I spent a few days of my meditation practice trying and trying to make it happen, to take myself within as deeply as I could. The only result I got was a surface level presence, and destructive ego thoughts. This is where I found my shift. I could not try and make this happen, I could never force it. I had to let go just as deeply as I wanted to experience my internal energy.

Surrender to the process and allow yourself to align with whatever experience you want to occur. Never try to force it or create it. This leads us to our next principle…

Be Intentional –

It is all about intention in this space. Whether you are giving or receiving energy, whether you are teaching or learning, whether you are a curious beginner or a seasoned meditation veteran, yogi, or intuitive. Be intentional in everything that you do, and especially in your spirituality and exploring such a space. I have found that when I have a clear intention, and when I trust in that intention blossoming in it’s own perfect timing, I let go of that feeling to control or make a specific experience happen.

Be intentional with why you are beginning or continuing your practice. Be intentional in why you are trying out a new tool, practice, or technique. Be intentional in what experiences you’d like to try and live or try on. Then surrender and allow the process (and the outcome of such experiences) to be what it will be.

This practice of intention in itself will bleed into every other realm of your life and bring with it quite a bit of beauty (i.e. more kindness, more giving, more love, more understanding of others, etc.) along with it.

Be experimental –

To me, spirituality is about exploration and openness, which translates easily into experimentation. Try on whatever techniques and tools you feel called to! Some will feel amazing and work wonders for your body, mind, and soul, and others will not vibe with you quite right. Be playful with whatever you are interested in and inspired by, and when something doesn’t work quite right, move on. It may not be that it didn’t work or wasn’t right for you, it may be that it was not the right timing for you and you may try something more than once.

This experimental and open mindset and intention will open up opportunity for you to experience deeper realms of yourself and your being than you knew existed. It can also teach you what you are ready for, and what you’re not. Which can be incredibly insightful as to where you may need to work a little harder to grow in that area of yourself.

I hope these points of perspective and guidance carry you along your journey and into some beautiful depths with ease.

All of my love to you.

Ask The Universe For What You Want

Ask The Universe For What You Want

The only reason that dreams in our society hardly become reality, is because we accept that the dreams we desire will ‘most likely’ never be our reality anyway, and that’s before we even try to work towards them! I’d like to invite you to instead be open to the possibilities of the Universe, which includes your dream (whatever that may be) becoming your reality.

For the most part, we have been conditioned, and conditioning each other, not to believe in ourselves. While this is shifting in some ways, it still remains the reality for the vast majority. Why is this? We know of the vast opportunity that the Universe has for us. We have seen people achieve the impossible, build incredible society serving things from nothing, and change the world with their bare hands. So why don’t we believe we can do the same ourselves, let alone try to achieve our own versions of that?

Ask The Universe For What You Want from the Spirit & Soul blog

I think this is because we also have grown into a place where we aren’t as keen on asking for what we want. While this is also shifting in some very positive ways, I still see it happen with so many people around me. In mentoring sessions I see people looking for clarity tell me exactly what they want, and the only thing keeping them from the clarity they seek is them. They have to allow themselves to lean into and trust in their desires, and their worthiness. Now, this isn’t easy, but it is one of the most important pieces to achieve that which you desire. It is not selfish to want a beautiful, vibrant, and safe life for yourself. It isn’t selfish to not want to experience distress or exhaustion on a daily basis.

These are our basic human needs. We have to be in a good emotional and physical place so that we can serve those around us in a more impactful way. We also have to be in this space, to the best of our abilities, so that we can align ourselves with what we desire. Part of what can bring us into that energetic alignment, is asking the Universe for what we want.

The more open you are to the Universe supporting you, the more you will see synchronicities, signs that you are on the right path, and the things you desire manifesting for you in even more perfect + divine ways then you could have imagined. So today take a moment to reflect on this: Do you have clarity on what you want? Are you open to the Universe supporting you in actualizing those desires? Are you open to the Universe offering you something better?

And lastly, do you trust that you are supported in what desiring what you desire?

I’d love to hear what this blog inspired to shift in your life + perspective today. Share with us in the comments below how you were inspire + empowered by the shifts you may have had!
